EGAN is happy with the result of the EP voting
European Parliament recognizes the benefits of DHA (Omega 3 fats) in infant formula: 'EGAN is happy with the result of the EP voting'
It is generally accepted that breastmilk is always better for babies than infant formula. It has also been recognized for some time that breastfed infants have better developed visual functions than those who are fed formula. Traditional infant formulas do not contain any of the Omega 3 fats, particularly DHA, whereas breastmilk does, provided the mother has these important fats in her diet. If she does they are passed to the infant through breastfeeding.
Therefore, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has accepted a health claim in favour of the addition of DHA to infant formula. However, part of the European Parliament doubted this EFSA opinion in March and voted against this health claim.
In a plenary vote in the European Parliament last week, on April 6, this vote was overruled and now a majority of the members of the EP voted in favour of the use of DHA in infant formula.
In a letter from EGAN, EGAN expressed their concern that not all mothers, especially in developing countries, are always able to breastfeed and therefore sometimes infant formula is needed. If needed, these infant formula should be made according to the highest scientific standards. One of the largest problems why women in developing countries should not breastfeed, is the risk of transmission of aids/hiv.
