Description:
BBMRI Stakeholders’ Forum Information/Discussion Meeting
Brussels, Wednesday 9th June 2010
Dear Members,
VSOP has been closely involved with the Stakeholders’ Forum of the European initiative BBMRI (the Biobanking Research Infrastructure for Europe) and its commitment to establish a community of international BBMRI Patient Representative Stakeholders, through increasing awareness of the value of networked biobanking activities and by developing support for key initiatives in biobanking.
On behalf of the BBMRI Stakeholders’ Forum therefore, we would like to invite interested VSOP members to consider this personal invitation to participate in the Information and Discussion Meeting entitled “The European Biobanking Research Infrastructure: A Step Closer”. The meeting will be held at the Residence Palace, Brussels, Belgium, on Wednesday 9th June, 2010.
Experts are being invited to this meeting from the broad community of stakeholders of BBMRI, comprising researchers from academia and industry, clinical organisations, patient representatives, research administrators, ethicists and lawyers from all over Europe, including key representatives of many of the most important biobanking projects in the world, to discuss the potential impact on biomedical research from the construction of a European biobanking research infrastructure.
The meeting will include a Patient Stakeholders’ Workshop which aims to focus attention on the unmet needs of patient stakeholders, to explore communication to patients in the context of biobanking and to discuss the integration of biobanks with patient registries. Invited speakers for this workshop include Tsveta Schyns of ENRAH, Jan Geissler of ECPC and Nick Fahy of the European Commission (DG-SANCO).
BBMRI recognises that engagement with patients and patient organisations as stakeholders in biobanking practices results in valuable partnerships and sources of input in biobanking research. Indeed, an increasing number of patient organisations are working towards creating their own biobank. It is in this context that the BBMRI Stakeholders’ Forum has issued a Patient Participation Consultation Document. A draft copy of this document is available at dmitchell@ipposi.ie.
BBMRI will make every attempt to reimburse those travel expenses for patient participants who are unable to meet costs from other sources, for the purposes of attending this meeting.
