Date: 28-02-2011 - 28-02-2011

Location: Brussels

Description:

Rare Disease Day 2011
European Symposium
“Rare but Equal”
Addressing Health Inequalities for Rare Disease Patients in Europe

The European Organisation for Rare Diseases (EURORDIS), is delighted to invite you to mark Rare Disease Day 2011 with us on 28 February at Centre de Presse International, Résidence Palace, rue de la Loi 155, Brussels.

Whilst the average level of health in most parts of the EU have continued to improve over the last decades and huge progress has been made in scientific research and medical technology, health gaps amongst and within Member States of the EU are widening, especially given the current economic crisis which is hitting hardest the most vulnerable groups in society.

These health gaps are further aggravated for people with rare diseases.

The European Union has called for a concerted action to redress health inequalities. Recent initiatives such as the EU Solidarity for Health Initiative, the EU Disability Strategy and the Cross-Border Healthcare Directive, recognise that efforts have to be made to level the playing field amongst and within Member States.  In this context, special attention should be given to the needs of less advantaged people, including the disabled and those suffering from discrimination, stigmatisation and barriers to accessing health and other services.

On the occasion of Rare Disease Day, join a multi-stakeholder audience to discuss the health inequalities faced by rare disease patients across Europe today and explore measure to mitigate them.
