Patients’ engagement in health technology assessment

Date: 29-06-2010 - 29-06-2010

Location: Brussels, Belgium

Description:

EPPOSI will hold in 2010 a two days workshop on Patients’ engagement in health technology assessment. The first meeting will take place on the 29th June 2010 in Brussels while the second one will be on the 17th of November in the same city. The aim of this will be to explore the context in which HTA is currently undertaken, and from the questions to be addressed at a larger open meeting to be convened on 17th November 2010. This will also be held in Brussels.
The first meeting will focus on, inter alia, issues such as what exactly is “patient engagement” and how can it be made to work in HTA? This will draw, for example, on the recent value and projected completed by the European Patients’ Forum and other examples of current practice. It will also address the likely evolution of HTA, taking account of emerging research methods and decision making processes that seek to balance a variety of forms of evidence. With these developments
the accountability to patients and patient organisations who contribute to the process and their roles and responsibilities will be discussed.
The outcome of this first part will be used to develop a concept paper that will form the inputs and discussions at the second, larger workshop. This in turn will be used to raise awareness of the potential that patients and patient organisations have as partners in HTA with national agencies, the European Commission and International bodies such as HTAi and the need to invest in high quality research to obtain robust evidence about patients’ views.
The workshop format will ensure the maximum possible opportunity for discussion and debate in order to ensure the exchange of ideas and the development of concepts, avoiding the re-statement of previously held views.
